Today's post is a simple DIY formula for "Beach Waves" Texturizing Mineral Hair Spray. I've modified this formula for personal use after reading the ingredients list of these "sea salt sprays" currently on the market. I chose to make my own.
A simple formula of Himalayan Pink Sea Salt, rose water, and spring water. Himalayan Pink Sea Salt, also called pink salt is one of the cleanest, most beneficial, and multi-tasking salts in the world today. It contains over 84 minerals and trace elements including calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper, and iron. It is considered a rock salt and primarily comes from the region of Punjab in Pakistan. This region has one of the richest salt fields in the entire world and is believed to be composed of dried remnants from the ocean when the Earth first formed. If you travel 200 miles east you'll reach the Western Himalayan Mountain Range.
Now that you may have a better idea of where pink salt comes from make sure you can acquire the best ingredients for yourself. It can be purchased online or in most health food stores. Be sure to trust the brand and where it is sourced from. It can be white, pink, or red in color. It may not be directly from the Punjab region, but be sure to know how much processing went into it and what mineral value is contained. As for the rose water in this hair spray, if you can make your own floral rose distillate, power to you! I'll be posting about floral water distillates and hydrosols at a later date. Stay tuned for that. Rose water can be found online or in health food stores as well. Same rules apply when sourcing best quality - do your research. Furthermore, feel free to play around with adding scents with essential oils to your personal blend. Be careful not to go overboard. A little essential oil "eo" goes a long way and can be irritating to the skin if not used properly. I use the three simple ingredients mentioned above skipping the eo's and love the way it smells.
*3 tbsp of Himalayan Pink Sea Salt
*4 tbsp of rose flower water per 1 cup of spring water (a good measurement to start at)
*Glass container with spray bottle top (preferably dark glass to block light and keep formula cool)
*1 to 3 drops essential oil of your choice (optional)
Add the salt to your water first in a glass container or better yet straight into your glass spray bottle. You can heat the water a bit before adding the salt to help the dissolving process along if you wish. Once closed, shake your salt water solution to blend. Let sit and dissolve overnight. No specific tools are needed, but a small funnel and small spoon can be helpful.
The next day add your rose water. For more drying, texture & volumizing effects - add more salt. For more softness - add more rose water. I like to put seas shells in the bottom of my bottle for a little extra magic. This spray is perfect as a replacement or in addition to dry powder shampoo. As well, it volumizes thin hair while the hair follicles soak up a copious amount of minerals and nourishment. I especially love it for maintainig frizz. If you want to take this blend to the next level add your favorite herbal infusion (strong tea) or decoction like nettle, rosemary, mint, eucalyptus, or lavender.
Store your new hair "Beach Waves" Texturizing Mineral Hair Spray in a cool, dry place or in the fridge for a cold, fresh effect. You may have some formula left over. Store in a closed mason jar in a cool dry place or share with friends. Continue to experiment and enjoy!
